This paper proposes a distance relay in time domain based on the R-L differential-equation algorithm which is suitable for wind power integration system. The traditional distance protection is no longer reliable and may incorrectly operate, . In practical engineering, the distance protection is typically not installed at the line terminal close to the wind farm side because it cannot guarantee a reliable operation with the influence of the frequency deviation phenomenon.
This method can avoid the influence of fault current frequency deviation on the measured impedance of the distance protection at the wind farm side. 2. Case studies The RTDS simulation model shown as Fig. 1 is built. The parameters of the DFIGs and the transmission lines are listed in Table 1, Table 2.
This paper proposes an improved distance protection method based on dynamic frequency estimation. After the protection is started, the dynamic frequency is estimated by multiple signal classification algorithm firstly. The distance criterion is not activated until the estimated frequency is close to the fundamental frequency.
The performance of the traditional distance protection is verified by the following tests. In this case, a phase-A-to-phase-B fault is set to occur at the end of the transmission Line 1 at t = 0 s. The crowbar resistance value is set to 20 times the rotor resistance. The rotor speed frequency varies from 40 Hz to 58 Hz.
The distance protection based on the measured impedance with fundamental frequency is widely applied in the ac power system. In this work, an improved distance protection method based on dynamic frequency estimation is proposed.
