A: Testing has shown that water is the most efective agent for cooling for a battery ESS. For this reason, a sprinkler system designed in accordance with NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, is required by NFPA 855, Standard for the Installation of Energy Storage Systems.
Without adequate cooling, batteries can reignite, even after the initial fire is suppressed. For this reason, both FM DS 5-33 and NFPA 855 mandate the use of automatic sprinkler systems for ESS fire suppression.
Automatic Sprinkler System. Sprinkler systems are the preferred method for protecting ESS due to their superior cooling capabilities, low cost, human safety, and environmental friendliness. While the rack frame may obstruct direct water flow to the cells, sprinklers can still effectively prevent a fire from spreading to adjacent racks.
With the rapid expansion of lithium-ion battery use across various sectors, ensuring fire safety and effective hazard management has become critically important. The National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA) addresses this need comprehensively with its newly revised Lithium-Ion Batteries and Fire Sprinklers Guide.
According to a June 2019 research report titled “Development of Sprinkler Protection Guidance for Lithium-Ion Based Energy Storage Systems” by FM Global, the minimum sprinkler density required for ESS is 12.2 liters per minute per square meter (Lpm/m 2), or 0.3 gallons per minute per square foot (gpm/ft 2), for both LFP and NMC batteries.
A sprinkler system that complies with NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, should be installed in buildings where an ESS is installed. A BMS is a critical system that should be used in an ESS to monitor, control, and optimize performance of an individual or multiple battery modules in an ESS.
