Kyiv produces lithium battery packs

Kyiv is planning to open up the large Dobra lithium field in central Ukraine, containing between 80-105 million metric tons of lithium ore, to private investors, marking the first project under the agreement.

Rod Schoonover, a national security expert and founder of the U.S.-based Ecological Futures Group, said it is unlikely that seizing Ukraine's lithium deposits was a major war objective for Moscow. Russia itself has significant reserves. Still, Ukraine's mineral wealth is one reason the country is important to Russia, experts say.

High-capacity lithium-ion batteries mean the base stations, Shchyhol said, “should have reserve power sources for at least three days.” And they can recharge themselves when the power comes back online. Two of the biggest telecommunications firms in Ukraine have, between them, already sourced and installed 22,000 new high-capacity batteries.

So Kyiv has turned to a simple solution: better batteries. High-capacity lithium-ion batteries mean the base stations, Shchyhol said, “should have reserve power sources for at least three days.” And they can recharge themselves when the power comes back online.

The most prominent lithium deposits in Ukraine are the Polokhivske deposit and the Dobra site in the Kirovohrad region, Shevchenkivske in the Donetsk region, as well as the “Kruta Balka” of the Zaporizhzhia region (Fig. 4).
