This review highlights recent progress in the development of lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, and battery–supercapacitor hybrid devices.
Nowadays, the energy storage systems based on lithium-ion batteries, fuel cells (FCs) and super capacitors (SCs) are playing a key role in several applications such as power generation, electric vehicles, computers, house-hold, wireless charging and industrial drives systems.
Despite the advancements in improving the energy storage density of supercapacitors, their energy storage capacity remains limited. The hybrid energy storage system's purpose is to bridge this gap by attaining battery-like energy content while preserving the high-power output and long cycle life of supercapacitors.
To improve the performance of the hybrid energy system, a super-capacitor storage system is associated with a fuel cell which is not able to compensate the fast variation of the load power demand.
