The battery energy storage systems are mainly used as ancillary services or for supporting the large scale solar and wind integration in the existing power system, by providing grid stabilization, frequency regulation and wind and solar energy smoothing,,,, . Regarding the energy applications, sodium–sulfur batteries, flow batteries, pumped hydro energy storage systems and compressed air energy storage systems are fully capable and suitable for providing energy very quickly in the power system, whereas the rest of the energy storage systems are feasible but not quite practical or economical .
Regarding the energy related cost, pumped hydro and compressed air energy storage systems have the lowest range of values, followed by the lead–acid, sodium–sulfur, zinc–bromine flow batteries and flywheels, . The nickel–cadmium and vanadium redox flow batteries have the highest range of values regarding energy related costs.
