The study investigates the potential of vertical bifacial photovoltaics (PV) adoption in the European electricity market. It shows that with up to 50% deployment, curtailment levels could be reduced, system costs lowered by around 3.8 billion Euros, and gas consumption decreased by nearly 12%.
This aspect is particularly important in regions where building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems, which are ideal for such mixed orientations, hold significant potential for PV expansion. Norway serves as a prime example of such regions, where optimizing land use is critical for better PV adoption.
These variations involve an increased share of vertical bifacial PV installations. It is important to note that, in the base case, no investments in vertical bifacial PV module are assumed, implying that all PV installations are the typical inclined south-facing PV type.
A recent study 5 calculated a conservative benchmark of over 1 TWp for the PV capacity potential in the EU on rooftops (560 GWp), vertical bifacial PV along roads and rails (403 GWp) and floating PV (157 GWp) on reservoirs (which can also be bifacial).
The results show, that favouring vertical bifacial systems reduces peak PV production, and ensues a production profile that covers a larger number of hours, which helps solar-based production maintain higher market value.
