Kashmir Battery Energy Storage Project

Battery storage system. Image by: Aurora Energy Research. Indian battery maker GoodEnough Energy intends to launch initial production at a 20-GWh factory in the state of Jammu & Kashmir in its home country by October, targeting a ramp-up to full capacity by 2026.

GoodEnough Energy, a battery energy storage systems (BESS) manufacturer, said it will open India's largest BESS gigafactory with 7 GWh capacity in Jammu & Kashmir. The gigafactory is expected to commence operations in October 2024, with plans to scale up the capacity to 20 GWh by 2026.

GoodEnough Energy revealed its ambitions to inaugurate India' s first battery storage gigafactory, located in Jammu and Kashmir, in October. This project is designed to contribute significantly to the national goal of achieving a net zero emissions balance by 2070, pledging to reduce more than 5 million tons of carbon emissions annually.

It estimates it will need more than INR 4.5 billion (USD 54.1m/EUR 49.6m) in investments to execute the project, which once fully commissioned, will create the largest battery production complex in India.

The solutions will allow to store energy during off-peak hours to reduce costs. The gigafactory will create over 100 new supplier and vendor opportunities for small and medium enterprises and boost job creation in the Jammu & Kashmir region, according to the company.

According to the statement, the goal of the gigafactory project is to empower industries to achieve their green energy targets and thus contribute to India's carbon reduction efforts. The country has set a goal of expanding its renewable energy fleet to 500 GW by 2030 from 178 GW in August 2023.
