Energy storage encompasses an array of technologies that enable energy produced at one time, such as during daylight or windy hours, to be stored for later use. LPO can finance commercially ready projects across storage technologies, including flywheels, mechanical technologies, electrochemical technologies, thermal storage, and chemical storage.
Moreover, as DES are becoming more and more important in the energy system, three representative energy storage applications in the DES, which are home energy management, commercial and industrial energy management, and distributed energy storage systems, will also be investigated in the case study as a special insight.
Evaluation of the major energy storage technologies shows consistent with literature and experience. Flow batteries, hydrogen energy storage, and the emerging applications are optimal energy storage alternatives in distributed energy systems. Energy storage systems (ESS) are becoming an essential component of energy supply and demand matching.
The input data for the base case for these emerging energy storage technologies, Powerwall 2 and Blue Battery, are based on information obtained from the Tesla company website and AquaBattery, respectively. The key characteristics of all the energy storage technologies investigated in the case study are shown in Table 4.
Characteristics of the energy storage applications (Akhil et al., 2013, EPRI 2010). In terms of the energy storage technologies, sixteen storage options including fourteen general energy storage technologies and two specific ones (i.e. Powerwall 2 and Blue Battery) are included in the study.
The selection aims at finding the optimum energy storage technology that not only meets the technical constraints posed by the energy storage application, but also possesses the best overall technical, economic and environmental performance (i.e. high technical maturity, low total cost, and little negative environmental impact).
