Key decisions, such as a 2008 multi-party agreement establishing the long-term national energy strategy for decarbonizing electricity generation, played a crucial role in this. Uruguay excels in energy equity, mainly thanks to its near-universal electricity access across the country (more than 99% of the population in the past 15 years).
Still, Uruguay faces the same challenges in Energy Security as the rest of the world: addressing system reliability as renewable energy integration grows to ensure a resilient transition. This will require investments in energy storage, grid modernization, and smart technologies.
Uruguay's green hydrogen strategy could be a game-changer in this area: it offers storage solutions, further integrates renewables into the energy matrix, and positions Uruguay as a renewable energy exporter (not only solar and wind, but also biogenic CO2 availability would enable it to export PtX products as well).
Green hydrogen production could strengthen Uruguay's Environmental Sustainability and Energy Security scores by diversifying energy generation and enabling large-scale energy storage. This initiative supports domestic emission reduction goals and allows Uruguay to contribute to global decarbonization commitments.
To address this, Uruguay has launched a Second Energy Transition aimed at reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels and related GHG emissions, particularly through initiatives to increase energy efficiency, electrify end uses, and further integrate renewables into hard-to-abate sectors.
Digital technologies are further transforming Uruguay's energy sector. Smart meters now support demand-response programs, enabling consumers to adjust usage during peak times and easing grid pressure. Over 80% of households now use smart meters, enabling real-time consumption monitoring and fostering energy literacy.
