Named the Ulsan Gas Power Solution, or Ulsan GPS, the 140,000-square-meter (34.6 acres) combined-cycle power plant is Korea's first power plant that can burn both LNG and LPG as fuels. The power plant, which began construction in September last year, is the first of its kind in the world deployed at such a scale, according to SK gas.
SK gas aims to complete the installation of the main components by October. Named the Ulsan Gas Power Solution, or Ulsan GPS, the 140,000-square-meter (34.6 acres) combined-cycle power plant is Korea's first power plant that can burn both LNG and LPG as fuels.
The power generation capacity is 1.2 gigawatts (GW), similar to one nuclear power plant, which provides enough electricity for 2.8 million households (based on 250 kWh monthly usage per household) annually. By installing the latest and most efficient gas turbines among domestic LNG power plants, the plant has high generation efficiency.
Construction of the LNG-fired plant in Kwangyang National Industrial Complex (South Jeolla Province) was completed by K-Power in September 2006, and the plant is owned and operated by SK Power of Seoul. The plant cost KRW680bn (around $700m).
Kwangyang is a merchant power plant, and will operate competitively in the electricity pool market. The Project is the first power plant in Korea to independently import Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) for its own use. That creates an alternative channel for importing fuel into Korea outside the traditional Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) route.
A 406-megawatt steam turbine generator installed at SK gas' Ulsan GPS power plant is currently under construction. [SK GAS]
