Spot market prices, which recently peaked at $45.47/kg, the highest since 2011, are higher than those locked into long-term contracts. This means that companies producing their own polysilicon are at an advantage with lower input costs.

The role polysilicon plays in solar energy conversion lies in its semiconducting properties. It allows sunlight or photons to interact with electrons, generating an electric current.
Monocrystalline solar panels cost 0.90–1.20 per watt, offering 18–22% efficiency due to pure silicon, while polycrystalline panels are cheaper at 0.70–1.00 per watt but less efficient ( 15–17% ). Monocrystalline lasts 25–30 years with 0.3–0.5% annual degradation, whereas polycrystalline degrades 0.5–0.8% yearly.
While Shanghai Metals Market (SMM), EnergyTrend, InfoLink and PVinsights all saw a stable Chinese price for polysilicon used to make n-type ingots, the Silicon Branch of the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association again observed a price increase this week: for n-type chunks by CNY0.3 to CNY0.5 per kg, for granules even by CNY1.5/kg.
However, creating PV modules relies heavily on specific materials whose production rates are affected by prices and supply. Polysilicon is one of those specific materials, and if solar PV is going to be the solution, it will be critically important.
