Here are five things to know about the energy outlook for Central Asia and the rest of the CAREC region. 1. Energy demand in the CAREC region (excluding the PRC) will grow by more than 30% by 2030 In 2020, energy demand in CAREC countries was 204 million tons of oil equivalent (toe), without including the PRC.
By the end of 2024, the cumulative installed and operational capacity of new energy storage projects nationwide reached 73.76 GW/168 GWh, approximately 20 times that of the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan and more than 130% higher than at the end of 2023.
These include investments in power generation and energy efficiency. The region can further enhance its energy security through cross-border infrastructure such as the Central Asian Power System, which interconnects Central Asian countries at different voltage levels and enables regional power trade. 5.
The top five provinces and regions in terms of cumulative installed capacity of new energy storage were Inner Mongolia (10.23 GW/24.39 GWh), Xinjiang (8.57 GW/28.71 GWh), Shandong (7.17 GW/15.55 GWh), Jiangsu (5.62 GW/11.95 GWh), and Ningxia (4.43 GW/8.82 GWh).
Despite the promise of non-traditional sources of energy in Central Asia, lack of financing and the high cost of experimental technologies prohibit serious development of this fledgling sector. Installation costs of large-scale wind and solar power facilities can also be prohibitive.
In the years ahead, investors will continue to encounter an evolving energy industry in Central Asia, faced with complex issues such as increased competition for capital; environmental constraints; rising wages and labor costs; shifting centers of exploration, development, and processing; and unprecedented political change.
