2.1. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) Electrochemical methods, primarily using batteries and capacitors, can store electrical energy. Batteries are considered to be well-established energy storage technologies that include notable characteristics such as high energy densities and elevated voltages .
This article provides an overview of the many electrochemical energy storage systems now in use, such as lithium-ion batteries, lead acid batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries, sodium-sulfur batteries, and zebra batteries. According to Baker, there are several different types of electrochemical energy storage devices.
Electrochemical energy storage system undergoes chemical process to store and produce electricity. Batteries are the most widely used electrochemical energy storage systems in industrial and household applications (28). They are classified into two types namely primary and secondary batteries.
These classifications lead to the division of energy storage into five main types: i) mechanical energy storage, ii) chemical energy storage, iii) electrochemical energy storage, iv) electrostatic and electromagnetic energy storage, and v) thermal energy storage, as illustrated in (Figure 2).
It was classified into three types, such as sensible heat, latent heat and thermochemical heat storage system (absorption and adsorption system) (65). Based on the electrode materials and electrolytes used in the system, the secondary batteries were further classified as Lead-acid battery, Nickel-cadmium battery, Sodium-sulfur battery, Lithium-ion battery and flow batteries (32). Lead-acid (LA) battery is one of commonly used batteries and the oldest technology developed in 1859.
