The role of the BBU is to handle baseband digital signal processing, while the AAU converts the baseband digital signal into an analog signal, and then modulates it into a high-frequency radio signal. Next, the power amplifier unit in the AAU will amplify the signal power, and then the processed signal will be transmitted through the antenna.
AAU (Active Antenna Processing Unit) is a new type of equipment introduced by the 5G network framework, and has certain functional differences from RRU (Remote Radio Unit). RRU (Radio Frequency Remote Function) appeared in the 3G era. As early as the 2G era, the base station was also called BTS (Base Transceiver Station).
Data shows the power of the BBU is relatively stable and is affected very little by the workload, while AAU is opposite, with power consumption growing as the load increases. With S111 configuration and 100% load, the power consumption of a single station can even reach 3852.5W.
AAU also adds some BBU functions. In the 5G era, not only is the RRU and the antenna integrated into an AAU, but the physical structure of the BBU has also evolved into a CU (centralized unit) and DU (distributed unit) due to the network framework changed by 5G.
A 5G base station is mainly composed of the baseband unit (BBU) and the AAU — in 4G terms, the AAU is the remote radio unit (RRU) plus antenna. The role of the BBU is to handle baseband digital signal processing, while the AAU converts the baseband digital signal into an analog signal, and then modulates it into a high-frequency radio signal.
One piece of this power module is configured in the BBU3900 by default. One more power module is required if the total power consumption of boards in the BBU3900 is more than 360 W or the BBU3900 requires backup power of less than or equal to 360 W. The second power module is configured in the slot assigned to the UEIU.
